Position Title: Food Services Supervisor

Reports To: General Ward

Location: Kigutu, Burundi

Organization Overview

Village Health Works (VHW) is a joint American-Burundian non-profit and non-governmental organization whose mission is to provide quality, compassionate health care in a dignified environment while treating the root causes of illness, poverty, violence, and neglect in collaboration with those we serve. The organization’s operations are based in Kigutu, Burundi, with support from the headquarter office in New York. With close to 500 full- and part-time employees in Burundi, as well as a small team in the United States.

VHW delivers a wide array of programs in a catchment area of 200,000 people within the provinces of Rumonge and Bururi. VHW’s approach integrates clinical services with education, food security, economic development, environmental protection, music and the arts. Our central program is a clinic that conducts over 50,000 patient consultations and has 4 inpatient wards. VHW is currently constructing the Kigutu Hospital and Women’s Health Pavilion, a 150 bed surgical and teaching hospital. Construction and instillation of equipment is being completed over the second half of 2022 with a projected clinical opening in the first half of 2023.  In preparation for the hospital’s planned opening VHW, is expanding its technical capacity, procuring complex medical equipment and likewise is expanding its ability to install maintain this equipment.

Position Overview

Food service supervisor supervise, directs and co-ordinates the activities of workers who prepare, portion and serve food. He/she provides advice and may oversee standardization of recipes, menu preparation, portion, cost and waste control. Maintains records and provides data for planning and control of operating budgets. Orders food and non-food supplies, checks deliveries and maintains inventory records.

Specific Responsibilities :

  • Supervise, co-ordinate and schedule the activities of staff who prepare, portion and serve food
  • Estimate and order ingredients and supplies required for meal preparation
  • Prepare food order summaries for chef according to requests from dieticians, patients in hospitals or other customers
  • Establish work schedules and procedures
  • Maintain records of stock, repairs, sales and wastage
  • Train staff in job duties, and sanitation and safety procedures
  • Supervise and check assembly of regular and special diet trays and delivery of food trolleys to hospital patients
  • Ensure that food and service meet quality control standards
  • May participate in the selection of food service staff and assist in the development of policies, procedures and budgets
  • May plan cafeteria menus and determine related food and labour costs.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the food equipment and food service areas; delegate tasks and coordinate with employees to ensure that they deliver exemplary performance; train them to abide by the health, hygiene & food safety standards set for the industry
  • Inspect foodstuff, supplies and equipment to avoid shortage of stock and ensure that they conform to standard quality measures
  • Maintain a record of the cost and number of meals served to the patients and the hours worked by employees
  • Assist dieticians in planning menus for patients to ensure that meals are both tasty and nutritious
  • Interview, select, hire or fire employees when needed; supervise them and manage their budget and payroll records
  • Be well informed of the latest food industry advancements and of how these changes might affect the industry and the business

Skills and qualifications required:

Minimum of two years related experience in a hospital and/or fast paced restaurant environment. Strong supervisory, leadership and coaching skills. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
