Organization Overview
Village Health Works (VHW) is a joint American-Burundian non-profit and non-governmental organization whose mission is to provide quality, compassionate health care in a dignified environment while treating the root causes of illness, poverty, violence, and neglect in collaboration with those we serve. The organization’s operations are based in Kigutu, Burundi, with support from the headquarter office in New York. With close to 500 full- and part-time employees in Burundi, as well as a small team in the United States.
VHW delivers a wide array of programs in a catchment area of 200,000 people within the provinces of Rumonge and Bururi. VHW’s approach integrates clinical services with education, food security, economic development, environmental protection, music and the arts. Our central program is a clinic that conducts over 50,000 patient consultations and has 4 inpatient wards. VHW is currently constructing the Kigutu Hospital and Women’s Health Pavilion, a 150 bed surgical and teaching hospital. Construction and instillation of equipment is being completed over the second half of 2022 with a projected clinical opening in the first half of 2023. In preparation for the hospital’s planned opening VHW, is expanding its technical capacity, procuring complex medical equipment and likewise is expanding its ability to install maintain this equipment.
Position Overview
Medical records Officer will be responsible for preparing patient charts and gathering information and documents from patients, ensuring that the medical records are organized, accurate and complete, creating digital copies of paperwork and storing the records electronically, filing the paperwork and reports of inpatients quickly and accurately, safeguarding patient records and ensuring that everyone complies with the HIPAA standards,
transferring data into the facility’s main system database, processing the records for admitting and discharging patients.

Medical Records Clerk education and training requirements
Medical Records Clerks are required to have a lot of medical expertise, so applicants should typically have some post-secondary education. Most employers look for candidates who have at least completed an associate degree or a similarly accredited program in health information technology. Some of the courses applicants should have taken include anatomy, data systems, physiology, coding systems and health care reimbursement. Employers may prefer to hire candidates who have certifications in this field, such as the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS), though these are typically optional.
Medical Records Clerk experience requirements
Medical Record Clerks are usually required to have prior experience in a medical facility. The experience can be obtained through entry-level office jobs, internships or volunteer work. Most employers prefer candidates who have at least 1-2 years of experience in a medical office setting, and some also look for individuals who have experience using computers and data entry software.
Skills and qualifications required:
Minimum of two years related experience in a hospital and/or fast paced restaurant environment. Strong supervisory, leadership and coaching skills. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
