Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, and the direct supervision of the PDSU coordinator, and in close coordination with the Media and Communications Officer, the Communication Assistant will support the design and publication of high-quality visibility material to showcase IOM’s work in Burundi.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Support the implementation of communications plans: media plan, social media plan, internal communication plan (including compilation of the Burundi News Brief) in line with IOM media and communications guidelines.
  2. Assist with the gathering, preparing (particular emphasis on formatting and design) and disseminating of public information on IOM activities in the country, both in writing and
  3. Draft and edit public information material for IOM’s website and social media in clear and concise English and French, including statistical reports, queries and maps.
  4. Assist with the development of content in the form of human interest stories from the field, photographs and video clips for an international audience.
  5. Provide support for a timely and efficient publication and distribution of media content for the mission’s social media channels as well as the global website and other IOM media, websites, blogs etc.
  6. Provide general assistance to Project Development and Support Unit Coordinator and IOM Chief of Mission with on-going media requests and coordinate interview opportunities for the CoM.
  7. Support Programme and relevant Units to develop and update programme factsheets and other communication materials, including infographics, communication campaign tools, banners, etc as well as documenting and updating key mission figures, and ensuring that all public information materials are available both in English and French.
  8. Coordinate closely with all Programme Communication Assistants to ensure a common identity and unified / coherent messages. This includes internal coordination with graphic support assistants.
  9. Coordinate IOM’s media outreach with donors, international partners and other international and news Map media and other key stakeholders in the country (UN Agencies, Partners, Donors, Government press officers as well as Key journalists for national and international media to include in the mission distribution list).
  10. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Chief of Mission or the Project Development and Support Unit Coordinator.

Required Qualifications and Experience


  • University degree in communication, languages, graphic design, journalism, or related field from an accredited academic institution, with 3 years of relevant professional experience or;
  • Completed high school degree from an accredited academic institution, with 5 years of relevant professional experience.


  • The candidate must have a proven knowledge of graphic design software such as the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Lightroom, Dreamweaver) and its plug-ins, and web design coding languages.
  • Familiarity with graphic design fundamentals, especially branding work.
  • Familiarity with website design and maintenance.
  • Strong practical background in design, editing and production, including the use of design software such as the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Lightroom) and its plug-ins.
  • Proven experience of graphic production from start to published/printed product with knowledge of printing processes and color management.
  • Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms.
  • Knowledge of animation/motion design techniques is an advantage.


  • Knowledge of Kirundi, French and English (Oral and Written)

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.
